MV Tian Kun Hao (天鯤) is a Chinese dredger that has been described variously as “Asia’s most powerful island maker” [1] and "magic island maker" due to its capability to dig 6,000 cubic metres per hour of sand/silt.[2] [3] The ship was launched at Qidong in Jiangsu province in November 2017.[4] The ship is apparently named after "a legendary enormous fish which can turn into a mythical bird". China’s new cutter suction dredger (CSD), the Tian Kun Hao, rumoured to be the largest dredger of its kind in Asia, has been put into operation in March. The dredger was put out to sea from the port of Lianyungang in China’s eastern province of Jiangsu.
At 140 m-long and 27.8 m-wide, with a total installed capacity of 25,843 kW, the dredger can dig up to 35 m deep under the sea floor and dredge 6,000m3 per hour.
As previously reported in DPC April 2019, the dredger is said to be used to provide raw material for the new military island bases in disputed territories in the South China Sea.
